Overview
Named after the former President of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, the Reimar Lüst Award recognises the contribution of outstanding individual academics to promoting cultural and academic relations between Germany and their own countries.
Nominations for the award may be made on behalf of highly respected academics who, as multipliers in and through science, have made an exceptional contribution to the long-term promotion of bilateral relations between Germany and their own countries.
The award recognises individuals whose overall record is characterised, in particular, by
1) their contribution to the promotion of cultural and academic relations between Germany and their own country in the humanities and social sciences, such as
• academic achievements in a bilateral context, translations or transfer of academic traditions from and to Germany
• building academic collaboration, informal or formal networks, such as initiating academic exchange, establishing bi- or multinational graduate schools or institutes for advanced study
2) and / or their interdisciplinary contributions to promoting cultural and academic relations between Germany and their own country, such as
• promoting bi- or multilateral institutional collaboration or
• bi- or multilateral shaping of outstanding academic institutions and organisations (e.g. in their role as science managers, such as rectors, or presidents).
The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and the Fritz Thyssen Stiftung jointly grant two Reimar Lüst Awards annually. Nominations of qualified female candidates are particularly encouraged. The award is financed by the Fritz Thyssen Foundation and the German Federal Foreign Office.
Value of this award
The award amount totals 50,000 EUR.
In addition, to strengthen and extend sustainable bilateral cooperative relations with their partners and other specialist colleagues in Germany, the award winners are invited to spend several months in Germany. The period of six to twelve months may be sub-divided.
In the context of the invitation to Germany, the award winner will receive a single lump sum to cover his or her return travel expenses. For further information please refer to our brochure "Reimar Lüst Award for International Scholarly and Cultural Exchange - General Regulations and Information for Award Winners"
Nomination Requirements
The nominee’s outstanding contribution to the promotion of sustainable bilateral cultural and academic relations between Germany and his or her own country must be recognised and documented by corresponding successes.
Academics who have already received an award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation are not eligible for a Reimar Lüst Award.
In order for the award winner to take full advantage of and effectively use the invitation to Germany, hosts are expected to prepare for the award winner’s stay in Germany by, for example, arranging and organising lecture tours and seminars as well as lectures by the award winner for junior academics in Germany. They should provide access to archives and libraries as well as personally mentor the award winner during his or her stay in Germany.
The nominating academic should either be willing to host the award winner personally in Germany or to name appropriate and interested academics, or academic and research-related institutions in Germany (if, for example, the nominator works at a German research institution abroad and therefore cannot act as host).
Selection Procedure
An independent Selection Committee appointed by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and the Fritz Thyssen Foundation meets twice a year, in spring and autumn, to decide on the nominations in the respective round. Nominations may be submitted by 15 May of any given year to the following address:
Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Selection Department Jean-Paul-Str. 12, 53173 Bonn, Germany
To make a nomination, please use only the current nomination documents, which can be downloaded from the Humboldt Foundation’s website.
Further information on the selection procedure can also be found online and in the "Guidelines for completing the nomination".
