UK: Engineering Doctorate in Research Project: Advanced CSP integration for decentralized power supply for buildings, Brunel University

Overview

Our prestigious 4-year Engineering Doctorate (EngD) programme in Environmental Technology is sponsored by the EPSRC. The programme offers environmentally focussed research, in an industrial setting, along with personal and professional development to research engineers whilst they study towards their Doctorate.

Concentrated solar power (CSP) is a proven technology capable of transforming over 50% of incident solar radiation into usable energy. As such, this technology offers significant opportunities as we move into the new era of decentralised supply networks delivering clean and renewable high-grade energy to local buildings.

The proposed research aims to develop the processes required to interface with designers and other specialists at the various design stages. The project will support the uptake of CSP in the built environment by creating suitable interfaces with the construction industry and its current practices and procedures. This will include; working on real design projects to simplify and improve confidence in the CSP design process; investigating the effect of local climate (e.g. the effect of cloud cover, humidity and direct/diffuse sky radiant proportions); analysing the effect of the scale of the installation for different systems; and creating novel solutions (e.g. combining CSP with PV technologies).

Energy and the environment is a strong research area in the School of Engineering and Design at Brunel University, with current activities covering the distributed generation of energy through to the efficient utilisation of energy and the use of renewable resources. BDSP Partnership is one of the few SME building services and environmental engineering consultancies that actively pursues and participates in research projects in renewable energy and software development.

Entry Requirements:

Applicants should have or expect to obtain a 2:1 or 1st class degree and/or an MSc in mechanical, sustainable energy and built environment engineering or related disciplines. The ideal candidate will have experience in integrated energy system design and experimental research, and have a good theoretical and practical knowledge of energy system analysis and data acquisition. Experience with relevant computer simulation software, programming and techniques such as ray-tracing (Radiance), computational fluid dynamics, and dynamic process modelling would be an advantage.

Scholarship circa £19,200

Closing Date: 30 May 2010

The studentship is subject to the EPSRC rules for eligibility, see: http://www.epsrc.ac.uk/PostgraduateTraining/StudentEligibility.htm, which state that only UK and EU nationals who have resided in the UK for three years immediately prior to the start of the programme are eligible for support.
