Overview
The Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada is seeking applications for Foreign Government Awards. The Government of Korea through the National Institute for International Education Development* (NIIED) offers scholarships for study/research at the graduate level.
One or two awards are offered for study at the graduate level in Korean studies, humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, engineering, and other subjects.
Award Value
•Airfare (economy class tickets) to Korea and return on expiry of the scholarship.
•Exemption from tuition fees (those who do not meet the minimum acceptable grades are not exempt and must pay their own tuition fees);
•If applicable, language training expenses (up to one year paid directly to the school by the NIIED);
•Monthly living allowance of 900,000 won;
•Settlement allowance of 200,000 won upon arrival;
•Research fund (2 times per year): 210,000 won per term for humanities and 240,000 won per term for natural sciences (for books, student association fees, dissertation review charge and other requirements);
•Dissertation printing fee up to 500,000 won;
•Medical insurance for the award holder (illness and accidents)
•Repatriation fund of 100,000 won upon completion of studies;
Note: All amounts are subject to change.
Duration
•2 years for a Master's degree
•3 years for a doctoral degree (less than a year of language training can be granted if necessary).
Note: Extension of a scholarship period is possible in some cases.
Eligibility
All applicants must:
•Be Canadian citizens.
•Hold an undergraduate and/or a graduate degree from a Canadian university or the equivalent.
•Be under 40 years of age for Master's and doctoral degrees.
•Have a sound working knowledge of Korean and English.
•Select the university and the subject of study and make necessary contacts to secure acceptance.

•Certificate of admission from the Korean institution or copy of correspondence testifying that you have requested admission.
Please submit the following documents by mail:
•Proof of Canadian citizenship: one certified copy of the following: birth certificate, citizenship card or passport (do not include original documents); a certificate of baptism is not accepted as proof of Canadian citizenship.
•Official transcript (one) of ALL post-secondary studies to date (COMPLETE academic record(s) including College of Applied Arts and Technology-CAAT and CEGEP) Note: transcript(s) must be submitted in sealed envelopes or sent directly to CBIE at the address provided below.
•Three (3) original letters of recommendation from academic sources i.e. professors. Note: letters must be submitted in sealed envelopes or sent directly to CBIE at the address provided below.
•Certified copy of the diploma (notarized by Notary Public or stamped by the university that issued it) for the highest degree obtained.
•One recent passport-size photographs. Write your full name and nationality on the back of the photograph.
•If applicable: language certificate.
•If applicable: Two sets of artwork samples for applicants in Fine Arts, Music and Architecture. Applicants in the history or theory of art, music, or architecture are not required to submit samples.
Deadline
Complete applications must be submitted to CBIE by 11:59 p.m. EDT, February 18, 2011. Supporting documents must be postmarked on or before this date.
