Overview
Through its Jean Monnet Fellowship Programme the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies (RSCAS) offers one or two year fellowships to post-docs in an early stage of their academic career. The main criteria of selection are the CV of the applicant, the overall scientific quality of the proposal, and the fit of the proposal with the Centre's research programme. Applications should include a description of the applicant's planned research project while at the Centre.
Priority will be given to proposals that fit well with one or more of the Centre's core research themes: EU Institutions, Governance, and Democracy; Migration; Economic and Monetary Policy; Development Policy; Competition Policy and Market Regulation; Energy and Climate Policy; International and Transnational Relations; and Global Governance.
Up to 10 Global Governance Fellowships are given to junior scholars from economics, history, law, and social and political sciences who will undertake research on global governance issues. Preference is given to proposals within the following domains:
International financial and economic regulation;
Global governance and democracy;
History of globalisation;
Comparative regional integration;
Transnational private governance;
International trade;
Climate change;
Terrorism and counterterrorism policies
International Human rights
Eligibility
Jean Monnet Fellowships are intended to support post-doctoral research by academics in the early stages of their academic career.
The fellowships are open to candidates who will have successfully defended their Ph.D. by 31 July 2011.
Candidates are eligible during the 7-year period following the successful completion of their Ph.D. (to be eligible for the current call 2011/2012, the Ph.D. should be completed between 31/7/2004 and 31/7/2011.
Extensions to the 7-year rule are allowed in cases of applicants whose academic career has been interrupted due to maternity leave or illness. In particular, for each maternity leave an additional year will be permitted, while in the case of a long or recurrent illness the total period of illness may be taken into account in calculating eligibility.
Explanation of the circumstances should be included in the application in the field marked 'Additional Notes'. Supporting documents will be requested from candidates proposed for selection.
Candidates who have received their Ph.D. from the EUI can only apply for JMF after they have been away from the Institute in a full-time occupation or with another fellowship for at least one year after defending the Ph.D.
Nationality
Candidates of all nationalities are eligible for the Jean Monnet Fellowships
Languages
Fellows should have a good knowledge of the languages most relevant to their proposed research, and a working knowledge of English.
Duration
The fellowships are usually for the duration of one or two years (12 or 24 months from September to August). Candidates should indicate the preferred duration of the fellowship in the application form.
In case of a fellowship of less than 12 months, no grant will be paid for the month of August.
In case a fellow leaves before the fellowship ends (before late July), the stipend will be accordingly reduced.
Residence
Fellows must live in Florence for the duration of their Fellowship so that they can take an active part in the academic activities of the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies.
Publication
The research done during the fellowship should lead to a publication, either as an EUI Working Paper, or in a scientific journal, or with a reputable academic publisher.
Stipend
The basic stipend is € 2,000 per month.
Successful applicants benefiting from other grants or salaries must disclose this to the EUI, as the amount of the fellowship will be fixed at a lower rate (minimum € 1,250 per month) depending on the additional income.
If applicable, family allowances will be added to the basic stipend (see below)
Family allowance
A household allowance of € 300 per month is paid to fellows with a partner when the partner lives with the fellow in Florence and on the condition that the partner's income does not exceed € 2,000 per month.
There is a dependants allowance of € 200 per month for each dependent child living with the fellow in Florence.
Fellows are entitled to these allowances if they can declare that they are not receiving any similar allowance from another source, and upon production of relevant certificates (marriage certificate or equivalent, birth certificates).
For dependent children in full-time education and over the age of 18, a school or university certificate is required. No allowance is paid for dependent children over the age of 26.
Travel expenses
Fellows (but not their families) receive one return trip from their home town to Florence, in accordance with the following provisions:
- first-class rail for distances under 500 kilometres (travel by car is also reimbursed on this basis)
- tourist class Y air fare over 500 kilometres
Selection Procedure
Candidates are selected by a committee of staff from the RSCAS and approval is given by the Executive Committee of the EUI. Their decison is final and there is no appeal. Reserve candidates are sometimes nominated and offered places if selected candidates do not accept.
The next deadline is 25 October 2011 for the academic year 2012/13
