Sainsbury Management Fellowship Scheme for MBA

Overview

The SMF scheme, which is administered by the Royal Academy of Engineering (RAEng), provides a bursary to talented young engineers with leadership potential to study for a Masters degree in Business Administration (MBA) at internationally renowned business schools. Upon successful completion of the MBA, the engineers become a member of the SMF Society, which provides a range of benefits including networking, courses, mentoring, plus careers support.

The Sainsbury Management Fellows society was set up to:

- Demonstrate that the combination of a Chartered Engineering status and a top MBA degree are ideal professional qualifications for future leaders of UK industry
- Encourage high flyers into UK engineering and technology posts for an exciting and rewarding career
- Provide support to enable ongoing career development of members
- Help influence and shape UK industry

What is the value of the award?

Each Fellowship has a financial value of £30,000

Which schools are involved in the programme?

In North America:

Harvard, MIT, Stanford, Wharton, Columbia, Kellogg and University of Chicago

In Europe:

INSEAD (France), IMD (Switzerland), London Business School (UK), RSM (The Netherlands), IESE (Spain), SDA (Italy) and HEC (France)

Who can apply for the award?

A suitable candidate will:

- Be a UK citizen normally domiciled in the United Kingdom
- Ideally, have a first or upper second class honours degree in engineering or a closely allied subject
- Have Chartered Engineer status or be making substantial progress towards it
- Have the potential and ambition to achieve senior management responsibility at an early age
- Be aged between 26 and 34 years old at the commencement of the scheme

How do I apply?

Applicants should complete and submit the application form. Applications can be made by individuals acting independently or in conjunction with an employer. Where an employer supports an application, it is helpful if the employer can supply a covering letter confirming this along with outline plans for the candidate’s subsequent career development.

What happens next?

Application forms are assessed and short-listed candidates will be contacted within 4 weeks. They will then be invited to complete an on-line personality questionnaire. On securing a place at their chosen business school, a selection of candidates will then be invited to a Selection Panel where the final decision is reached.

Invitations to attend Selection Panels are subject to the availability of places.

When should I apply?

Applications can be made at any time but, as there is considerable pressure on the application procedure for both the business schools and the scheme, it is recommended that candidates apply as early as possible, ideally four months before the intended date of entry into business school.

Who manages the scheme?

The scheme is funded by the Gatsby Charitable Foundation and administered by the Royal Academy of Engineering.
