Post Doctoral Fellowship in Physics and Astronomy - Edinburgh

Overview

Applications are invited for a Post Doctoral Fellow to work at the Institute for Astronomy (IfA), Royal Observatory Edinburgh in the study of galaxy evolution, especially in the high-redshift Universe. It is intended that the successful applicant will focus on studies of the rest-frame ultraviolet-optical Universe at high redshift, via exploitation of the CANDELS WFC3 HST Treasury programme, the Spitzer SEDS and SpUDS surveys, the Ultra-VISTA survey, and associated spectroscopic follow-up. However, depending on the skills and interests of the successful applicant, there may also be the opportunity to complement this by studying dust-enshrouded star-formation in the young universe, via the SCUBA2 Cosmology legacy survey, associated Herschel data, and ultimately ALMA. This position is funded via the award of a European Research Council (ERC) Advanced Grant to Professor Jim Dunlop who is an executive member of the CANDELS consortium, and co-PI of the both the Ultra-Vista and SCUBA2 Cosmology Legacy surveys. It is anticipated that the appointee will ideally be an experienced post-doctoral researcher capable of taking a leadership position in the field of galaxy evolution.

The IfA is a component of the School of Physics & Astronomy, and is located at the Royal Observatory Edinburgh (ROE) on Blackford Hill, close to the science campus of the University, and sharing the site with the UK Astronomy Technology Centre (UK ATC), an establishment of the Science & Technology Facilities Council (STFC).

The successful applicant will join a world-leading research group within the IfA, but will also have the opportunity to exploit our strong links with UK ATC project scientists working on the KMOS spectrograph for the VLT, the MIRI instrument for JWST, and future instrumentation design for the European ELT.

Terms of Appointment
