Postdoctoral Fellowships
1- One year Preparation of a doctoral dissertation for publication
2- Two years To develop a new research project which is a significant development from the subject of the doctorate.
3- (CARA) Three years (Two years in non-Irish HEI and return third year in Irish HEI)
To develop a new research project which is a significant development from the subject of the doctorate and spend a research period outside of Ireland, in order to gain new knowledge and international research experience.
Value of each fellowship
Fellowships 1 and 2 are valued at
€35,161 per annum:
€31,745 to be paid to the Fellow
€3,412 in PRSI costs.
Fellowship 3 CARA are calculated using the principles of the Marie Curie outgoing fellowships 2009 and have abase rate of €54,300 per annum
CARA: Host
Support of Two host institutions
- Home Host – (36 months) HEI Ireland, principal host, supports fellow for entire fellowship, home host mentor required
- International Host - (24 months) HEI outside Ireland, supports fellow for mobility period, can be anywhere in world int. host mentor required.
Who can apply
Applicants from any country may apply …. However you
- can not have resided or carried out your main activity (work, studies, etc) in the country of your chosen ‘international host’ institution for more than a total of 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the call deadline;
- must satisfy the ‘home host’ and ‘international host’ State’s regulations on immigration and have the support of the host institution(s) with respect to these regulations and requirements;
- Maintain your principal residence in the host country for the duration of the fellowship If you are not an Irish Citizen then you:
- must have resided and worked in Ireland for 3 years out of the 5 years prior to the call deadline
- can not apply for a fellowship at a ‘ international host’ organisation in the country of your nationality / citizenship
Eligibility
- Potential applicants MUST:
have been awarded their doctoral degree within the five-year period (viva date 31 January 2005) before 31 January 2010. Extensions to this five year period can be considered on provision of documented evidence of an eligible career break
who by 31 January 2010, have been certified as having fulfilled all the requirements for the award of a doctoral degree, including a viva, where such is required.
- Research proposals which have been previously funded, either in fact or substance, under this or any IRCHSS Scheme are not eligible for consideration for further funding.

- Call is currently OPEN
- 2 attempts only (for Fellowships 1, 2 and 3)
- Deadline is 4pm on Friday 19th February 2010
- 1 original signed copy to be posted to IRCHSS offices
- 1 electronic copy to be emailed to applications@irchss.ie
