UK: Research Engineer - Fully Funded Professional Engineering Doctorate Research Project

Overview

Fully funded Professional Engineering Doctorate research project with tax free stipend @ the Industrial Doctorate Systems Centre (Universities of Bristol and Bath) and Saint Gobain Performance Plastics Rencol Ltd., Bristol

The Company

Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics Rencol is the only company in the world specialising in the design and manufacture of the Tolerance Ring - a precision engineered steel fastener.

The successful candidate will be based in a progressive working environment focused on innovation and its effective implementation and will work as part of a technical team that has a significant impact on the success of the business.

The work environment is conducive to the broader training and development of young engineers with an accredited Institute of Mechanical Engineering scheme leading to Chartered engineer status.

We pride ourselves on an open, high trust culture and our employees' rate this as one of our top strengths. Please visit our website www.rencol.co.uk

The Project

The implementation of simulation tools to optimise design and manufacture of spring components

This 4 years research project leading towards an Engineering Doctorate degree is aimed at refining and implementing tools already developed to improve the optimisation of our product and production process. The product is based on non-linear interface mechanics and dynamics, which are configured to give it excellent functionality for the computer storage, automotive and white goods sectors.

The focus of the project will be on developing an understanding of the design factors that influence product performance, enabling aspects of the product design and the manufacturing process to be optimised for performance and robustness. Knowing which factors are most important will focus process control onto the parts of the manufacturing process that are most critical. The result will be a more robust product design with reduced variability as a result of manufacture.

The challenge will not only be the 'hard' application of the tools, but also the successful integration of the process - and the learning that is generated - into business operation systems to realise operational improvements. Hence there will be a combination of hard systems (design, analysis, manufacture) and soft systems (business, customer interaction, market penetration, internal processes) that must be researched to enable the integration to be accomplished.

Qualifications

Minimum of an Upper Second (2:1) class honours degree (or equivalent).
