Bangladesh: Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program

Overview

The American Center, U.S. Embassy, Dhaka is pleased to announce the Fulbright Visiting Scholar awards beginning in September 2011. These will be primarily research grants for the duration of six to nine months; however, interested scholars can apply for semester-long lecturing grants as well. These awards will be offered to senior Bangladeshi university faculty members and researchers at think-tanks and relevant non-governmental organizations to conduct research and possibly to lecture.

Please note that proposals in science disciplines cannot be considered for this program. We seek proposals on a vast variety of topics in education, business, social science, humanities and arts.

The program is intended for scholars who possess an advanced degree (Ph. D.), or professional equivalency, and who propose to conduct research and/or teach in the fields of their specialization. The candidates must have excellent English language skills to enable them to productively use their time in the United States to the best advantage. They should be highly motivated, and must commit to returning to Bangladesh immediately upon completion of their original proposed research or teaching assignments. Prospective applicants will need to submit an on-line application, and all relevant documents in support of the application must also be uploaded electronically. The application is available at https://apply.embark.com/student/fulbright/scholars. Applicants should create a log-in account in order to access the application. A copy of the announcement and complete instructions are available at http://dhaka.usembassy.gov/programs_for_scholars_professionals.html. Applicants must read instructions thoroughly and carefully before filling out the application form.

Applicants should submit a carefully written, detailed project proposal of their proposed research. The selection committee places great emphasis on the proposal. The program is highly competitive, and interested candidates are required to submit well-written proposals. Applicants must be able to complete their proposed project within the grant period. References, confirmed letters of invitation, correspondences from U.S. institutions, curriculum vitae, passport copies for the scholar and all accompanying dependents should be submitted online with the application.

To apply for the lecturing grant, prospective candidates must have extensive teaching experience. Teaching experience abroad is an added qualification. Candidates must submit course syllabi along with curriculum vitae and a confirmed invitation to lecture.

Eligibility

Candidates must be Bangladeshi citizens and must reside in Bangladesh at the time of application. Applicants possessing U.S. permanent residency or citizenship, or in the process of receiving U.S. permanent residency, will not be eligible for the fellowship. Due to funding limitations, applicants who have spent significant periods of study outside Bangladesh or who have recently received a major U.S. government grant must wait five years before applying for a senior Fulbright award. It is only in extremely rare circumstances that an applicant who had previously received a Fulbright grant would be awarded a second grant. rant benefits for the Visiting Scholar program include all related expenses, a stipend and cost of the grantee’s Bangladesh/USA/Bangladesh air tickets. The grant also includes a dependent monthly allowance for one dependent only who will spend at least eighty percent of the time with the grantee during the grant period. If a grantee receives a nine-month grant, a dependent will be eligible to receive air ticket if she/he remains with the grantee at least eighty percent of the time. All grantees are required to report to the American Center upon successful completion of their grant and must submit a written report on their research findings.

The deadline for submitting an online application and all required documents is Thursday, December 2, 2010. After a review of proposals, short-listed candidates will be called for an interview.
