About the Corporate Partnerships Program: EDF’s Corporate Partnerships Program has a 20 year history of working with leading companies – McDonald’s, Citigroup, FedEx, Walmart, and others – to demonstrate that good environmental strategy is synonymous with good business strategy. About the Geballe Fellowship Program: The Geballe Fellowship seeks recent graduates of advanced degree programs in business or environmental management for a two-year position with EDF. Working under the guidance of a Corporate Partnerships Managing Director, the fellow will support EDF’s work in three ways. First, fellows will work on ongoing long-term projects – such as our Green Returns initiative with Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. (KKR), The Carlyle Group (Carlyle) and other leaders in the private equity sector to make measuring and improving environmental performance a standard practice across the industry. Second, fellows may assist on “rapid response” efforts to work with leading corporations on short-term projects designed to test the potential for impact and industry-level change. Finally, fellows may also support our new project development efforts to identify and research new partnership ideas. At the end of two-year fellowship, the fellow is expected to “graduate” from EDF with new environmental expertise and project management skills and move on to a position with a leading corporation. EDF assists the fellow in finding such opportunities through mentoring, access to industry experts, and travel to meetings and conferences.
Responsibilities: The upcoming Geballe Fellow will be based in Washington, DC and will initially be assigned to our Green Returns team. The Fellow’s duties may include the following:
· Working with KKR, Carlyle, and other private equity leaders to continue to improve and scale best practices for environmental measurement across their portfolio companies;
· Developing tools, resources, and case studies that demonstrate the financial and environmental opportunities in private equity and disseminate them across the sector;
· Helping to communicate the results of our work in the private equity sector to Environmental Defense Fund staff, corporate partners, businesses, the media and other stakeholders through reports, press conferences, presentations, and other methods.
· In addition, the Fellow will be asked to support other “rapid response” and/or project development efforts on an as-needed basis.
Requirements: We are seeking an individual with direct experience in the business and environmental sectors with a relevant graduate-level education. In addition, the general qualifications for this position are:
· Masters degree in business administration (MBA), or an advanced degree in environmental studies, public administration or economics where relevant business experience is also present;
· Experience working on the business implications of environmental issues;
· A working knowledge of the current theory and practice of corporate environmental management;
· A broad understanding of environmental issues including the basic statutory and regulatory structure in the US and lifecycle assessment;
· Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to work with colleagues and partners of varied backgrounds and experience;
· Strong analytical skills and experience in performing rigorous analysis in support of highly visible work;
· An ability to work both independently and as a member of small teams in a fast-paced, dynamic and creative environment; and
· Proficient in the use of PCs and the Microsoft Office suite of software (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) desired.
Location: This position is based in our Washington, D.C. office.
Term: 2-year term position
Hours: Full-time (35 hrs/wk)
Compensation: Competitive; based on experience.
