Overview
The University of Chicago affiliated Chicago Center for Family Health (CCFH) and Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center offer a one-year full-time fellowship beginning September 2011. CCFH, co-directed by John Rolland, M.D. and Froma Walsh, Ph.D. provides state-of-the-art post-graduate training in family therapy and family systems-based health care in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team of specialists. Fellows have both primary and secondary clinical placements. The primary clinical placement is with Illinois Masonic Medical Center Family Practice, which has a longstanding reputation of supporting family and psychosocial aspects of health care within a collaborative framework.
Currently, Fellows have a secondary placement with the University of Chicago Kovler Diabetes Center (KDC). CCFH is partnering with KDC to develop their psychosocial component of care. Other partnering institutions for placement are based on current and planned projects. These have included: the Division of Integrative Medicine at a University of Chicago teaching hospital, Comprehensive Cancer Centers and risk-screening programs, the MS Society of Illinois, and Gilda's Club Chicago. Fellows have learning access to other programs at the University of Chicago, such as the MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics.
The clinical experience emphasizes work with families with a member who has a chronic or life-threatening illness or disability using family, couples, group/multi-family group and individual modalities. CCFH provides seminars, workshops, and individual and group supervision. Responsibilities include participation in multidisciplinary teaching conferences, teaching residents and medical students about the integration of family systems approaches in a variety of health care settings, and collaboration with healthcare providers. Candidates may develop or join an ongoing clinical research project related to families and health care. Appropriate candidates include both post-doctoral mental health professionals and Ph.D. candidates enrolled in doctoral programs in family therapy who seek to satisfy their internship requirement.
Applicants should have a strong career development interest in the integration of family systems approaches in health care. Salaries and benefits are competitive with other fellowships nationally.
Inquiries can be made by phone or email (see below). Application materials should be received by February 10, 2011.
To apply, please send your Curriculum Vitae, three letters of reference, academic transcript, GRE scores, and a cover letter explaining your interest in the fellowship to: John Rolland, MD, Executive Co-Director, Chicago Center for Family Health, 20 North Wacker Drive, Suite 1442, Chicago, IL 60606-2902, 312-372-4731; 312-372-4732 Fax, jrolland@uchicago.edu, ccfh@uchicago.edu.
