Other requirements

■Language skills: Candidates must be fluent in English. All courses are conducted in English.
■Two letters of reference: Each candidate must submit two letters of reference. Each focus area has an email address to which these letters must be sent:

■Bio-Engineering: bioreflet@mitportugal.org
■Sustainable Energy Systems: sesreflet@mitportugal.org
■Engineering Design and Advanced Manufacturing: edamreflet@mitportugal.org
■Transportation Systems: transreflet@mitportugal.org

You must provide your two referees the email address for the course to which you are applying, and the reference letters must then be emailed to MIT Portugal by each referee. The reference letter template is available here. The letters should be printed on official stationery of the institution at which the referee works, and must include a URL for the institution so the affiliation can be checked. The letters must be signed by the referee and then attached to an email sent to one of the addresses listed above. It is the candidate's responsibility to ensure that MIT Portugal receives both letters before the application deadline.

Motivation letter: This must be in English, and should include your objectives and goals as well as your main areas of interest in the Program. Your letter should refer to specific research topics in which you wish to focus (related to the degree program to which you are applying), and should give your reasons for wishing to do graduate work in the field you have chosen. Include, to the degree you can, your particular interests, be they experimental, theoretical, or issue-oriented, and show how your background and the MIT Portugal Program support these interests. You also should explain your professional goals. Your statement of interest should be approximately 500 to 800 words in length.

The Program’s selection process is carried out by professors from Portuguese institutions involved in each degree, together with their MIT counterparts.

The following factors are evaluated in the review of each application:

■Academic grades
■Professional CV
■Motivation letter
■Interview (evaluation of candidates may involve an interview in English, which may take place in person or via videoconference/Skype)
■Reference letters

Scholarships

Each academic year, scholarships are available for outstanding PhD candidates in each of the Program's four doctoral programs. The best students with a scholarship will have the opportunity to conduct some of their doctoral research at MIT.

Descriptions of the FCT scholarships and stipends can be found at http://alfa.fct.mctes.pt/apoios/bolsas/regulamento.phtml.en and http://alfa.fct.mctes.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores.phtml.en. (Note that on these pages, BD refers to PhD scholarships.)

A few corporate scholarships are available in the Transportation Systems Master’s degree course (CTIS); they only cover tuition fees. In extraordinary circumstances, candidates who can demonstrate serious need may be able to obtain further funding to support living expenses.

The Executive Master’s programs do not offer scholarships.

How to apply for a scholarshipYou must indicate on the application form that you would like to be considered for an FCT scholarship.
