NERC-funded Postdoctoral Research Assistant at University of Leeds

Overview

Institute of Integrative and Comparative Biology (Full-time, fixed term for 18 months, available from 1 February 2011)

Project Title: Strength in diversity - the effects of host-parasite genetic diversity on transmission and evolution

An NERC-funded Postdoctoral Research Assistant position is available in the research group of Dr. William Hughes. The project will use honeybees and their chalkbrood fungal parasite as a model system to investigate the effects of host and parasite genetic diversity on parasite transmission and evolution. Real-time PCR will be used to quantify within-host parasite dynamics and serial passage experiments to examine evolution of the parasite. The project’s results will help inform management strategies for our increasingly vulnerable honeybee populations and will significantly advance our understanding of the evolutionary biology of host-parasite interactions in general.

You should have a first degree in animal biology, PhD in social insect biology and experience of working with social insects, including honey bees, and research experience in evolutionary biology and molecular ecology. You should be hard working, self-motivated and able to work well both independently and as part of a team. You should have experience with molecular techniques in general and substantial experience of microsatellite genotyping of social insects in particular.
