Prize MRes/PhD studentships in allergic mechanisms of asthma

Overview

The MRC-Asthma UK Centre in Allergic Mechanisms of Asthma is a partnership between the MRC, Asthma UK, Imperial College London, King’s College London and partner NHS Trusts to advance understanding of allergic mechanisms of asthma. This provides an outstanding opportunity for high-calibre PhD students to train in areas of basic and clinical science that have direct relevance to the development of novel approaches for the prevention and treatment of asthma.

Applications are now invited for up to 6 PhD studentships (1 plus 3 year) to start in October 2011. Students spend their first year either taking a full-time MRes in Biomedical Research at Imperial College London, or an MSc in Immunology (including a respiratory module) at King's College London. Both include 6 month laboratory based research projects. There is also the opportunity to do an MRes in Molecular Biophysics at King’s.

In the second year students start a full-time 3-year PhD project in one of the following subjects:

1.IL-25 and airways remodelling in asthma: the effects of IL-25 on lung fibroblasts and smooth muscle cells.
2.The effect of vitamin D on immune function in asthma.
3.The role of TCR structure in determining the magnitude and focus of an immune response in allergic and infectious inflammation in the lung.
4.Imaging Th1, Th2, Th17 and regulatory T cell responses in the initiation and resolution of allergic inflammation in the lung.
5.RAGE/TGFbeta in airway wall remodelling in asthma.
6.Impact of IL-33 in severe asthma.
7.Innate immune mechanisms of corticosteroid insensitivity.
8.Using genomics and proteomics to identify the mechanisms that target Activation Induced cytidine Deaminase (AID) to the IgE locus during germinal centre reactions.
9.Small molecule drug discovery targeting IgE/receptor interactions to control allergy and asthma.
10.Molecular mechanisms of IgE network interactions in regulating allergic responses.
11.Asthma therapeutics: development of biosensors sensitive to protein conformation.
12.Leukotriene receptors in asthma pathogenesis.
13.Local germinal-centre reactions to allergens in nasal mucosa in allergic rhinitis and allergen immunotherapy.
14.Basis for the allergenicity of peanut allergens.
15.Molecular targets for the ablation of IgE antibody-secreting plasma cells.
16.Molecular mechanisms underlying mast cell trafficking.
17.Regulation of interferons in the lung during viral infection.
18.Mechanisms underlying the pulmonary immune response to allergen-influence of gene-environment interactions.
19.Epithelial and systemic responses to aero-allergen exposure and pollen immunotherapy in children and adults with seasonal asthma/rhinitis.

Applications are also invited for one Graduate School Studentship (4-yr) based at King’s College London to start as soon as possible, with Professor Tariq Sethi.

The studentships will be funded for 4 years, with a tax-free bursary and tuition fees at the Home/EU rate. There is no provision for overseas student fees and applicants.

Applicants must hold, or expect to obtain, a first or upper second-class honours degree or equivalent in an appropriate subject from a recognised academic institution. To apply please send a CV, a one page personal statement on why you are applying to our PhD programme, and the names and addresses of at least two academic Juliana OIaduti at Juliana.oladuti@kcl.ac.uk Tel + 44 (0)20 7188 8717, http://www.asthma-allergy.ac.uk/.

Please note that candidates must fulfil College admissions criteria and MRC eligibility criteria (http://www.mrc.ac.uk/Fundingopportunities/Applicanthandbook/Studentships/Eligibility/index.htm).

Closing date for the full application is Friday 21st January 2011

Interviews will be held on: Friday, 4th February 2011
