Research Fellow at College of Engineering, Mathematics and Physical Sciences

Overview

This post will be based at the University of Exeter’s Cornwall Campus. The University of Exeter is a Founding Partner in the Combined Universities in Cornwall (CUC), a multi-million pound initiative aimed at expanding Higher Education opportunities in Cornwall. The new £100 million campus near Falmouth, shared with University College Falmouth opened in September 2004.

The University wishes to make an appointment at Associate Research Fellow level, in marine renewable energy at its Cornwall Campus. The successful applicant will join a strong research group in marine renewables with extensive physical and computational facilities and excellent support staff. The group works across the University and is part of the Peninsula Research Institute for Marine Renewable Energy (PRIMaRE, www.primare.org). There are close links with the Wave Hub project, a ground breaking initiative to deploy small wave arrays off the North Cornwall coast and device developers which are at the forefront of wave energy commercialisation. The new appointment would be expected to support the marine operation (mooring, installation, deployment & recovery) research for wave energy converters, which consequently leads to the commercial development of such devices at the Wave Hub site.

The group already has considerable success with research income and support from SWRDA (PRIMaRE - £5 million), the European Union FP7 (resource assessment and moorings research - £600,000) and EPSRC (wave prediction, £150,000), The Carbon Trust and the Technology Strategy Board (£500,000). Through these we also have an excellent international network of academic and industrial partners including machine developers and marine support companies.

Up to £24,273 depending on skills, qualification and experience

Applications are invited from candidates who i) have an in-depth knowledge of installation requirements for wave energy devices (including mooring analysis), ii) can make use of standard research techniques and methods required to support commercialisation of wave energy devices and iii) is able to deal with the project management tasks. It would be further expected that the successful candidate contributes to decision making affecting the work of the team and uses creativity to analyse and interpret research data to generate original ideas based on outcomes that leads to the publication of research that is of international standing and quality.

Ideally, the candidate will have already been research active in the field of marine renewable energy with proven record in wave energy. A demonstrated commitment to marine renewables, a record of project management and enthusiasm to cross disciplines will be an advantage to the post-holder, as the project will have to address technical, economic and policy research aspects to enhance the realisation of the installation of wave devices at the Wave Hub.

The primary intent of these appointments is to expand capacity in this priority research area. However, we would expect the successful applicant to contribute to teaching, be involved in the assessment of student knowledge and assist in the supervision of student projects.
