Senior Research Associate at The Department of Veterinary Medicine

Overview

The Department of Veterinary Medicine is situated adjacent to the city centre of Cambridge on Madingley Road. The University’s West Cambridge Site, currently houses the Cavendish laboratories, the Nanoscience centre, the new Physics of Medicine facility and the Gates Computational Science centre. The west site is being developed to provide new purpose built accommodation for science and technology departments, as well as residential accommodation, a nursery, restaurant and shopping facilities. Role

This exciting senior position is funded by the BBSRC, to look at the effects of vaccination and immunity on bacterial infection dynamics.

Applicants should have a PhD in one of the biological sciences and are required to have extensive experience in molecular microbiology, in vivo infection dynamics, fluorescence microscopy, immunology and animal models of infection. You should also be familiar with statistics and basic principles of mathematical modelling. Informal enquiries should be directed to Dr Piero Mastroeni (pm274@cam.ac.uk)


Main Responsibilities
1 Research and scholarship:

develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research;
conduct individual and collaborative research projects;
write up research work for presentation and publication;
continually update knowledge and understanding in field or specialism;
translate knowledge of advances in the subject areas into research activity;
manage own research and administrative activities, with guidance if required.
assist in the preparation of proposals and applications to external bodies, e.g. for
funding and contractual purposes;
communicate material of a specialist or highly technical nature.

2 Teaching and learning support:
may assist in the supervision of student projects;
provide limited supervision/instruction to classes;
may assist in the development of student research skills;
may plan and deliver seminars relating to research area.

3 Liaison and networking:
liaise with colleagues and students;
build internal and external contacts and participate in networks for the exchange of
information and to form relationships for future collaboration.

4 Planning and organising:
plan the use of research resources, laboratories and workshops as appropriate;
plan and manage own research activity in collaboration with others;
contribute to planning of joint research projects led by principal investigator.

5 Managing people:
mentor colleagues with less experience and advise on personal development;
coach and support colleagues in developing their research techniques;
carries out appraisals;
supervises other researchers.

Essential knowledge, skills and experience required for the role

- Holds a PhD in a relevant specialist subject.
- Have at least three years of postdoctoral research experience at the level of
Research Associate, or equivalent experience.
- Applicants should possess sufficient breadth/depth of specialist knowledge in the
discipline and of research methods and techniques to develop research objectives,
projects and proposals.
- Must demonstrate knowledge in the specialist area and engage in continuing
professional development.
- Experience of managing own workload.
- It is essential that applicants have sufficient administrative skills to manage
project/s including financial management.

Vacation Entitlement

You are entitled to paid annual leave of 33 days plus public holidays in any one academic year. The periods or period of leave must be agreed, in advance with the head of the institution. The period for calculating entitlement for holiday is the academic year, i.e. 1 October to 30 September.

Contract Period

The appointment will be for a period of three years and will be subject to a 6-month probationary period.

Stipend

The pensionable scale of stipends for a Senior Research Associate is £36,715.00 to £46,510.00

Hours of Work

Your hours of work should be agreed between yourself and your Head of Institution. As a guideline the General Board expect the average full time working week to be in the region of 37 to 40 hours a week.
