University of Cambridge Research Assistant in Viral Evolution

Overview

The Department of Veterinary Medicine, commonly known as the Veterinary School, is situated adjacent to the city centre of Cambridge on Madingley Road, on the University’s West Cambridge Site. The site currently houses the Department of Physics (Cavendish laboratories), the Nanoscience centre, the new Physics of Medicine facility and the Gates Computational Science centre, sections of the Department of Engineering, residential accommodation, and a nursery. The site is being further developed to provide new purpose built accommodation for science and technology departments, as well as a centre of excellence meeting centre. The main building of the Department incorporates the Queens Veterinary School Hospital. Further details about the Department are available at http://www.vet.cam.ac.uk/. The Lab of Viral Zoonotics includes four University staff, seven post-doctoral scientists, three research assistants and four graduate students and is led by Jonathan Heeney, Professor of Comparative Pathology.

Role

We require a Research Assistant to work on an NIH funded project to assist in the analysis and understanding of viral variants that escape vaccine induced neutralising antibodies. This person will be responsible for performing single genome amplification (SGA) of viral genes that evolve in natural infection as compared to those which evolve under vaccine induced selective pressure. The study will involve sequence analysis, cloning and production of pseudoviruses to determine viral fitness of different envelope variants and neutralisation assays to determine if derived variant envelopes are capable of vaccine escape.

You must have a University degree and lab experience in molecular biology and virology. Experience with PCR, next generation sequencing, capillary sequencing, cloning, cell culture, working with viruses in bio containment laboratories and performing viral neutralisation assays will be very advantageous. The candidate should have good communication skills and be able to write reports and present them to the lab group and collaborators. For informal enquiries please contact Dr. Mariana Varela by email mv307@cam.ac.uk
