Stellenbosch University is recognised as one of the four top research universities in South Africa. It takes pride in the fact that it has one of the country’s highest proportions of postgraduate students of which almost ten percent are international students.
A postdoctoral research fellowship is available for students/citizens from African countries.
Scope of Research: Economics of Education, Labour Economics, Poverty and Income Distribution
Requirements:
- A PhD in Economics obtained within the past five years and focusing on the Economics of Education, Labour Economics or Development Economics;
- A strong quantitative background;
- Experience in analysing survey or other Micro-datasets;
- Citizen of African country.
Recommendation: Experience in analysing data from cross-national educational evaluation studies such as SACMEQ, TIMMS or PIRLS.
Commencement of duties: As soon as possible

Scholars who meet the above requirements are invited to apply for this Postdoctoral Fellowship, attached to the National Research Chair in the Economics of Social Policy.
The Fellowship is tenable for one year, but could be extended for a second year. The Fellowship will be available for the 12 month period as a tax-free bursary of R150 000. In addition there is an allocated allowance of research funds to cover conferences, study visits and research material. A second postdoctoral appointment may be considered but is contingent on funding.

The Department of Economics at the University of Stellenbosch is one of Africa’s foremost Economics departments. The department places emphasis on quantitative, policy relevant research. The Research Chair in the Economics of Social Policy studies aspects of social policy and provides policy advice in the South African and wider African contexts. The chair is is funded by the National Research Foundation under its South African Research Chair Initiative (SARChI).
The Postdoctoral Fellow will be expected to:
- Publish research output from his or her completed PhD work
- Participate in new research by the members of the Research Chair, which will require the analysis of educational, labour market and/or household data
