Applications are invited from candidates with a first or upper second class honours degree, or equivalent, in chemistry, medicinal chemistry or a relevant subject for a 3-year PhD studentship in Molecular Imaging of voltage-gated sodium channels (VGSCs). The studentship, in collaboration with Medical Diagnostics Discovery, part of GE Healthcare (Hammersmith), will start in October 2009. Candidates should be self-motivated and have an interest in working within a multidisciplinary environment. A background in drug discovery or neuroscience would be a distinct advantage, although not essential, as training will be given.
VGSCs mediate rapid neuronal signalling and their dysfunction or upregulation is implicated in a range of neurological disorders eg epilepsy and pain, as well as various human cancers. The aim of this project is to develop novel PET (Positron Emission Tomography) tracers for sodium ion-channels, to allow greater insight and understanding of the mechanisms of such neurological diseases and cancers. Training will be given in synthetic chemistry, radiochemistry and neuropharmacology, providing the student with a broad range of techniques used in diagnostic biomedical research. Molecular imaging is a rapidly growing field and the successful candidate can expect excellent academic/industrial career prospects.
The project will be supervised jointly by Dr. A. Constanti (The School of Pharmacy, University of London) and Dr. E. Robins (Medical Diagnostics Discovery, Hammersmith, London). It is anticipated that supervision will be shared equally between the centres, to allow for maximum flexibility in experimental design and laboratory experience for the successful candidate.Study informationQualification:BSc degree in chemistry, medicinal chemistry or related subject with first or upper second class honours
