UK: PhD Scholarship in Manufacturing Technology Research Group

Overview

Loughborough University - Wolfson School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering
Costing for Avionic Through-Life Availability (CATA)

This is a collaborative project, led by the University of Bath, involving the Loughborough University and UWE; with industrial partners: BAE Systems (Military Air Solutions), Defence Equipment and Support (part of the MoD) and GE Aviation Systems and two international leading research groups from the University of Maryland and Georgia Tech.

The aim of this project is to research novel approaches to predict the through-life manufacture and repair costs for long-life avionic systems under availability contracting. The project will enable the avionics supply chain to predict, evaluate and optimize the costs of the manufacturing functions for in-service repair and maintenance during the early design stages to meet availability contracts.

Loughborough based PhD Research Studentship

Under availability contracting, suppliers of long-life avionic systems are required to predict the life cycle costs associated with maintaining their equipment in service. Limited information is available at the early stage leading to significant uncertainties within the estimating process. The student will explore the uncertainty in through life cost estimating and provide novel methods of modelling uncertainty for long life systems.

This scholarship is open to home/EU candidates only. The candidate must be expecting, or have already obtained a first degree (1st class or high 2:1 honours) in engineering or other relevant subject and preferably have knowledge of statistical modelling approaches. Applicants should be able to gain access to UK military information.

The proposed starting date is 1st October 2010 and the three-year scholarship is expected to have a stipend of £13,590 per annum tax free plus tuition fees.

Please apply through the following web page: http://www.lboro.ac.uk/departments/mm/post-graduate/by-research/index.html Should you have any problems downloading the documents please contact Ms Jo Mason, Research Administrator (J.R.Mason@lboro.ac.uk).
