PhD Fellowship in Carbohydrate Analysis, Denmark

Overview

A three year PhD fellowship is available at the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (BMB), University of Southern Denmark (Odense).

The aim of the project is to characterise carbohydrates which have been produced by naturally occurring as well as genetically engineering enzymes. Both in vitro and in vivo generated products will be of interest. In addition, characterisation of carbohydrate-metabolising enzymes and of glycoproteins will be within the scope of the project. The main technological platform for characterisation will be mass spectrometry/tandem mass spectrometry often in combination with liquid chromatography. The project will involve implementation of existing techniques in carbohydrate analysis as well as development of new analytical techniques, which can meet the challenges of complex samples obtained by enzymatic processes.

The project is a joint effort between University of Southern Denmark and the Technical University of Denmark. The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Southern Denmark has a unique international position in biological mass spectrometry with expertise and equipment at the highest level. The Department of Chemical & Biochemical Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark has strong competences in enzyme technology and bioconversion to produce prebiotic oligosaccharides, fibres and hydrocolloids with healthy functional properties.

The successful applicant will have practical experience within analytical (bio)chemistry - preferably mass spectrometry and/or liquid chromatography, but also knowledge in life sciences related to biochemistry or protein chemistry. Proficiency in spoken and written English is required as the PhD student will be working in very international environments.

For further information please contact associate professor Finn Kirpekar, tel.: +45 6550 2414, e-mail: f.kir@bmb.sdu.dk, web: www.protein.sdu.dk.

A new innovation is featured on our blog. It is a software called Significance Analysis of INTeractome. It is a computational software that analyzes mass spectrometry data. http://cbt20.wordpress.com/2010/12/08/free-software-for-purifying-mass-spectrometry-data/
