Post Doctoral Fellow at Australian National University

Overview

A Post Doctoral Fellow is sought to participate in ARC funded Discovery Projects focused on the swift heavy-ion irradiation of materials. The successful applicant will join a multi-facetted research group utilising ion irradiation and a variety of characterisation tools, including synchrotron radiation and transmission electron microscopy, to probe, identify and understand the interaction of ions and matter. While we seek a multi-skilled person, we place particular emphasis on transmission electron microscopy experience to enable the successful applicant to utilise a new 200 kV TEM equipped with FEG and EELS.

To be successful in the role you will achieve fundamental insight into ion irradiated materials to aid in their integration in advanced electronic and photonic devices. A wide range of processing and analytical tools are available on campus though travel to domestic and international facilities will be required to access very-high-energy ion accelerators and synchrotron radiation sources.

If you have a PhD in Physics, Materials Science, Materials Chemistry or Engineering, experience with ion implantation or irradiation and characterisation methods, in particular transmission electron microscopy, we would welcome your application.

ROLE STATEMENT:

1. Perform independent scientific research consistent with the aims of the externally funded projects.
2. Publish scientific articles in high ranking international journals.
3. Attend conferences and present scientific results.
4. Supervise honours and graduate students when required.
5. Submit applications to external funding sources for additional funding support.
6. Contribute to the activities of the research group as a whole by, for example, advising or assisting graduate students.
7. Assume minor administrative duties when required.
8. Contribute to undergraduate teaching in the form of invited lectures when required.

Selection criteria

1. PhD in Physics, Materials Science, Materials Chemistry or Engineering.
2. Advanced transmission electron microscopy and ion irradiation skills as demonstrated through a relevant PhD thesis and/or high quality international journal publications.
3. Additional laboratory-based analytical techniques such as Rutherford backscattering, Raman spectroscopy or electrical measurements and/or synchrotron-based analytical techniques including extended x-ray absorption fine structure and x-ray absorption near edge spectroscopies or small-angle x-ray scattering.
4. Proven ability to work as part of a collaborative team yet perform independent research and to author scientific manuscripts and grant applications.
5. Ability to work both independently and as part of research group and a willingness to participate in student supervision and contribute to the experiments of other group members.
6. Ability to independently author scientific manuscripts and grant applications to acceptable standards.
7. A demonstrated understanding of equal opportunity principles and policies and a commitment to their application in a university context.
