UNU-ISP: Master of Science in Sustainability, Development, and Peace

Overview

This programme addresses pressing global issues of sustainability, climate change, development, peacebuilding, and human rights through an innovative interdisciplinary approach that integrates the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities. The programme is intended for recent graduates, professionals, and practitioners, offering the unique opportunity to study at a global university within the framework of the United Nations. It provides students with the knowledge and skills to make important contributions towards solving global issues, whether through employment by UN agencies, other international organizations, governments, civil society, or the private sector.

The programme is practically oriented, user-focused, and of the highest academic quality. It offers opportunities to gain practical experience through internships or field research with a UN agency or other international organization. The programme builds on the strong record of the United Nations University (UNU) in training and capacity development, and utilizes the extensive network of scholars and academic institutions participating in UNU research.


Admission Requirements

Applicants for the Master of Science in Sustainability, Development, and Peace must possess at least a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) from a recognized university or institution of higher education.

English Language Requirements

Excellent written and verbal English language skills are required. Applicants whose first language is not English and whose bachelor’s degree is not from an institution at which English is the language of instruction must submit proof of English language proficiency within the past 2 years. The minimum score requirements for TOEFL or IELTS are listed below:

600 TOEFL paper-based
100 TOEFL internet-based
7.0 IELTS academic version

Exemptions:

The following applicants are exempt from submitting a score sheet.

Applicants whose first language is English.
Those who graduated from a university or a graduate school located in a country where English is the first language.
Those who completed an undergraduate or graduate degree programme taught in English. In this case, please submit a certificate showing that the programme you attended was taught in English.
Applicants who submit proof by any other means that have proficiency in English equivalent to that described in item 2) or 3).

Fees

Tuition fee: USD 10,000 per year

Estimated total expenses for the master’s degree programme for 2 years including tuition are 6,000,000 yen or approximately $72,000 USD*. Applicants must show financial resources adequate to meet the full costs of educational and living expenses.

*Based on the UN operational rate of exchange in October 2010: 1 USD=83.66 JPY.

Scholarship and Tuition Fee Exemption

Scholarships are available for outstanding applicants. The scholarship covers the tuition fees, and provides a monthly allowance of 150,000 yen for living expenses. 150,000 yen is the average monthly living cost for an international student without dependents in Tokyo, although this will vary depending on the lifestyle of the student. The monthly allowance will be provided for a maximum of 24 months. Travel costs to and from Japan, visa costs and health/accident insurances costs must be covered by the student.

In some cases, tuition fee may be waived for applicants who are not selected as scholarship recipients.

Applicants who wish to apply for a scholarship must submit the Scholarship Application Form concurrently with the Application Form. Please refer to the Scholarship Application Guide for more information (see website below).

The deadline for applications is 31 March 2011.
