Overview
Barcelona Graduate School of Economics offers a range of competitive Master programs in Competition and Market Regulation; the Economics of Science and Innovation; International Trade, Finance, and Development; and Macroeconomic Policy and Financial Markets (awarded jointly by the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and the Universitat Pompeu Fabra) and Master programs in Economics and in Finance (awarded by the Universitat Pompeu Fabra). The programs give students the analytical skills and specialized knowledge for a wide variety of career opportunities in regulatory agencies, international economic institutions, corporations, and academia, among others.
The Barcelona GSE Scientific Council advises the School and ensures the quality of its programs. It is made up of 33 leading international academics, including 9 Nobel laureates in Economics.
There are four main criteria for admission: academic preparation, English language requirement, quantitative skills (GRE/GMAT), and letters of recommendation. The application process to the Barcelona Graduate School of Economics is conducted entirely online.
The Barcelona GSE has a rolling admission policy so applications are accepted throughout the year.
Fully-funded scholarships
“La Caixa” Foundation - Barcelona GSE Scholarships for students from emerging and developing countries
The “la Caixa” savings bank Foundation and the Barcelona GSE offer 14 fully-funded scholarships to students from emerging and developing countries (*) with excellent academic backgrounds who will return to their home countries at the end of their professional training process to implement their knowledge.
This award covers:
master program tuition
medical insurance
round-trip airfare from the student's country of residence
monthly stipend for expenses during the student's stay in Barcelona
(*) Note: “Emerging and developing countries” is an expression used to name all countries not included on the following 2008 IMF list of “advanced economies”: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Cyprus, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong SAR, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Singapore, Slovenia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, United Kingdom, United States of America.
“La Caixa” Foundation is the institution which manages the resources that Caixa d’Estalvis i Pensions de Barcelona, "la Caixa", devotes to its social and cultural work. Among its priorities are cooperation with developing countries and promotion of higher education. “La Caixa”, based in Barcelona, is the leading European savings bank.
BBVA Foundation - Barcelona GSE Scholarships for Latin American students
The BBVA Foundation and the Barcelona GSE offer 5 fully-funded scholarships to Latin American students with outstanding academic backgrounds applying to any master program. Two of the awards are especially for Mexican candidates and the other three are open to candidates from the rest of Latin America.
This highly selective award covers:
master program tuition
medical insurance
round-trip airfare from the student's country of residence
monthly stipend for expenses during the student's stay in Barcelona
BBVA Foundation expresses the engagement of financial group BBVA with the cause of social responsibility in the societies where it does business, and has among its priorities the promotion of excellence in scientific research and higher education. BBVA is one of the main European banks and has a very important presence in many Latin American countries.
Internship-Scholarship Program - Catalan Foundation for Research and Innovation
This unique scholarship will be awarded to one student in the Economics of Science and Innovation (MESI) program. The scholarship combines full tuition coverage for the master program with a paid 6-month internship at the Catalan Foundation for Research and Innovation (FCRI). The internship is to take place from January through June of the master year on a part-time basis and full-time in July after graduation. The Catalan Foundation for Research and Innovation (FCRI) is a non-profit making institution which aims to promote and to foster research in all relevant areas, in order to boost and improve quality of the Catalan R&D&I system.
SEBAP-Barcelona GSE Scholarships for Catalan students
The Societat Econòmica Barcelonesa d’Amics del País (SEBAP) and the Barcelona GSE offer one fully-funded scholarship to a student who is a citizen of Catalonia who satisfies the admission requirements and meets the selection criteria of both institutions.
UniCredit & Universities Foundation - Scholarship for the Master Degrees in Economics and Finance
UniCredit & Universities Foundation offers 1 fully-funded scholarship to a student who is a national of one of the 22 European countries in which UniCredit Group operates (*) who has an outstanding academic background and is applying to the GSE master program in Economics or Finance.
This award covers:
master program tuition
medical insurance
round-trip airfare from the student's country of residence
monthly stipend for expenses during the student's stay in Barcelona
(*) Note: The 22 European countries where UniCredit operates are Austria, Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Turkey, Ukraine.
UniCredit & Universities Foundation is a private Foundation established by UniCredit Group in 2009. Its mission is to promote studies and researches in the fields of economics and finance through grants and scholarships to outstanding students from all the countries of UniCredit perimeter. “UniCredit”, whose Headquarter is based in Milan, is a leading Banking Group in Italy as well as in Europe with a very important presence in many Central Eastern Europe countries.
Tuition waiver grants
The support of the following sponsors enables the Barcelona GSE to offer full or partial tuition waivers. These awards are addressed to outstanding students applying to any master, with the exception of the Fundación Carolina scholarships, which are available only to students applying to the Competition and Market Regulation Program and the Economics of Science and Innovation Program. Applicants are informed of scholarship awards at the time of the admissions decision.
How to Apply
There is no extra application for these scholarships. The student will find the relevant section in the application form.
Students are reminded that only complete applications will be considered. In the online application form candidates must provide the following attachments:
- academic transcript
- statement of purpose
- curriculum vitae
- proof of knowledge of English

Admissions Dates and Timeline
The Barcelona GSE has a rolling admission policy so applications are accepted throughout the year. When the total number of places in a program is covered, no more applications will be reviewed for that program. (For example, last year the Economics program closed applications on May 15). Therefore all candidates are encouraged to apply as early as possible to avoide getting closed out.
Due to visa processing time constraints, it is highly recommended that non-EU citizens submit completed applications by July 15.
