Research Fellow in Sustainable Urban Planning

Research Fellow in Sustainable Urban Planning (R/13367/RWS)

This is a fixed term post available until 31 August 2012.

The Centre for Sustainable Planning and Environments is an established research Centre in the Department of Planning and Architecture. The Centre is seeking a Research Fellow to participate in the Centre’s research and consultancy activities and to undertake some teaching. The post-holder will undertake research and consultancy projects and prepare bids. He or she will also support the Centre in the preparation of publicity material, networking activities, and research dissemination. They will undertake some teaching and student supervision. We are seeking a Research Fellow with expertise in urban planning and an interest in sustainable development.

Salary: £29,853 - £35,646


PERSON SPECIFICATION

The following characteristics have been identified as necessary for the post holder to operate successfully in this post. It would assist your application if you address them in the information you supply, as well as highlighting any other factors that you consider relevant.

EXPERIENCE

Essential
• Experience of research at doctoral level in a planning or sustainability-related subject area.
• Experience of undertaking funded research and/or scholarship in a planning or sustainability-related subject area.
• Experience of preparing research bids.
• Experience of writing and publishing research.
• Experience of presenting research at conferences and/or seminars and/or public events.
• Experience of teaching university students.
Desirable
• Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary research team.

SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/DISPOSITION

Essential:
• Expertise in planning, with an understanding of sustainability issues, including climate change.
• Knowledge of planning theory.
• Knowledge of how to undertake research in planning and built environment fields.
• Knowledge of, and appropriate skills to undertake, a range of research methods appropriate for planning and built environment projects. Methods employed are qualitative and quantitative, e.g. questionnaires, focus groups, site surveys.
• Academic writing skills (as evidenced by a track record of refereed publications).
• Ability to use a PC for word processing, communications, preparing presentations and papers, and data analysis.
• Ability to work to tight deadlines.
• Ability to identify research opportunities and develop research bids.
• Ability to prioritise and plan activities and workload.
• Able to work with customers/students from a variety of different backgrounds e.g disabled students/staff, black & minority ethnic students/staff.
• A keen interest for the subject of sustainable urban planning.
• Self-motivated and think creatively about research problems.
• The tasks required in this post are likely to be varied and the post holder will need a flexible approach to change.
• Evidence of networking with external organisations.
Desirable:
• Some knowledge of statistical analysis and use of appropriate software (e.g. SPSS, Nvivo).

QUALIFICATIONS

• A Doctorate in a planning, sustainability or built environment-related subject.
• Committed to continuing professional development.

Other factors
• The post holder must be willing to undertake some travel (UK and international) where appropriate. There will be periods of up to a week away from home, undertaking fieldwork, prior notice will be given..
