University of Hong Kong MSc Scholarship in Computer Science (IT)

Overview

The University of Hong Kong is the oldest tertiary institution in Hong Kong. The official language of instruction is English. The University is referred by Quacquarelli Symonds as a "world-class comprehensive research university". In 2010, it was ranked 23rd in the QS World University Rankings and 1st in their Asian University Rankings. In another rankings, the 2010-2011 Times Higher Education World University Rankings cooperating with Thomson Reuters as the new data supplier since 2010, the university was ranked 21st in the world and 1st in Asia.

Applications are invited for admission in September 2011 to a programme leading to the part-time or full-time degree of Master of Science in Computer Science.

Information about the Programme

Mode and Duration of Study

For the part-time mode of study, the curriculum shall normally take two academic years of study; the maximum period of study is three years. For the full-time mode of study, the curriculum shall normally take one academic year of study; the maximum period of study is two years.

There are two patterns of study:

(a) Taught courses only: A candidate shall select twelve modules.
(b) Taught courses plus project: A candidate shall select eight modules and a project report or dissertation, which has a weighting equivalent to four modules, on a subject within an approved field of study.

The China Postgraduate Scholarships for Computer Science

The scholarships are to be awarded to those PRC candidates who have successfully applied and been offered a place in the Master of Science in Computer Science Programme as full-time students in Hong Kong. The scholarships shall be used to meet part of the composition fees for a full-time programme of studies leading to the degree. Successful applicants will need to pay the balance of the total composition fees minus the amount of scholarships awarded when they accept the offer.

Information on Application

Eligibility

Applicants must hold a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, or any relevant qualification of equivalent standard from this University or from another university or comparable institution accepted for this purpose. The purpose of this study is not to offer a conversion course for non-Computer Science graduates but rather, to offer an opportunity of advanced education in various areas of Computer Science. It is the students' responsibility to acquire the necessary prerequisite knowledge on their own.

English Language Requirement

Applicants who wish to be admitted on the basis of a qualification from a university or comparable institution outside Hong Kong where the language of teaching and /or examination is not English is required to obtain:

i. a score of 550 or above (paper-based test) or 80 or above (internet-based test) in the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). An applicant who took the TOEFL should request the Education testing Service (ETS) to send an official score report to the University directly. For this purpose, the HKU TOEFL code number is 9671. Test scores more than two years old will not be accepted.
ii. A minimum overall band of 6 with no subtest lower than 5.5 in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS); or
iii. Grade C or above in the Overseas General Certificate of Education (GCE); or
iv. Grade C or above in the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE); or
v. Grade C or above in the Cambridge Test of Proficiency in English Language; unless in exceptional circumstances they are exempted from this requirement.

Application Fee

The application fee is HK$300 (non-refundable) , paid by credit card online.

Transcripts

An official transcript should be requested from every college or university you have attended, except those undertaken in The University of Hong Kong. Photocopies of the transcript request form may be used to request transcripts from additional institutions. The official transcript with the transcript request form should be sent directly bythe registrar of the institutions to the MSc(CompSc) Programme Office. Please note that the University will only ACCEPT originals and copies of the documents that have been duly declared as true copies before a notary public.

Announcement of Results

Applicants who do not hear from the Faculty of Engineering by July 31, 2011 may assume their application unsuccessful.
