Optimisation of nutrient removal, membrane fouling and excess sludge dewatering in hybrid coagulation/submerged membrane bioreactor treatment of wastewaters

A PhD scholarship (Australian Postgraduate Award Industry (APAI) is available via an ARC (Australian Research Council) Linkage grant to investigate the potential for using coagulant(s) to optimise nutrient removal, membrane fouling and excess sludge dewatering in membrane bioreactors (MBR) for treating municipal wastewater. Coagulant addition is used widely in both conventional and membrane‐based water treatment as an essential aid to floc formation and is also recognised to assist greatly in reducing the extent of both phosphorus release and trans‐membrane pressure build‐ up in submerged membrane bioreactors. The effectiveness of coagulant(s) will be evaluated with particular attention given to the transformations that coagulant element species undergo in the membrane bioreactor. The intended outcomes of this research include optimising the protocols of coagulant dosage (type of coagulant, dosing point and frequency) such that nutrient removal from wastewaters is maximised, the severity of membrane fouling is reduced and sludge dewatering is improved.

This project involves collaboration with Sydney Water, Water Quality Research Australia, Beijing Origin Water Technology and Tsinghua University in China. The student will be based at the Water Research Centre within the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at UNSW and will be involved in field‐work at one of Sydney Water’s sewage treatment plants.


The suitable candidate will have a background in chemistry, chemical or environmental engineering or equivalent. Strong experimental and instrumental skills are required,.

A stipend of $27,222 per annum (tax free) will be provided for three years. Additional taxable support of up to approx. $10,000 per annum is available through acceptance of tutoring duties within the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents and foreign nationals may apply for this scholarship.
