PhD Scholarship in Wind Energy at The University of Manchester

Overview

The University of Manchester - School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering
The Project

The School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Manchester invites applications from suitably qualified students for a fully-funded EPSRC PhD Industrial CASE studentship sponsored by QinetiQ in the area of condition-monitoring of electrical generators in offshore wind turbines. The SUPERGEN Wind Consortium consists of university research teams and industrial partners with expertise in wind turbine technology, aerodynamics, hydrodynamics, materials, electrical machinery & control, and reliability & condition monitoring. QinetiQ are one of the industrial partners and are a leading international provider of technology-based services and solutions that have been helping to solve wind, wave and tidal energy issues over the past twenty years.

One of the biggest challenges in offshore wind farms today is reliability. Advanced condition monitoring systems are a key technology to improving the availability of wind turbines. The proposed project will continue earlier work into developing techniques suitable for diagnosing electrical and mechanical faults directly from the power spectrum produced by the turbine generator. The work will cover the new permanent-magnet generator technologies being proposed for large offshore wind turbines and extend into the development of suitable practical condition-monitoring systems.

Funding

The scholarship will provide full tuition fees plus a maintenance allowance for 3.5 years starting at £18,000 per year, which is paid directly to the student and is free of income tax. In addition, there will be an allowance to support research studies covering, for example, travel and subsistence for meetings and conferences, books and computing facilities. Due to the restrictions imposed by the scholarship scheme, this opportunity is strictly limited to UK students or EU students who have been resident in the UK for 3 years immediately preceding commencement. EU students who do not meet the residence requirement are eligible for a fees only award. The student will be expected to spend up to a maximum of 18 months at QinetiQ and the company pays any travel and subsistence costs. It is expected that the

Qualifications

Students should have a good upper second class honours degree in electrical engineering, or a combination of qualifications and/or experience equivalent to that level.
