Postdoctor Research Fellow in Bio- Inspired Computing, Norway

Overview

The Department of Informatics (IFI) is one of nine departments belonging to the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the University of Oslo. IFI is Norway’s largest university department for general education and research in Computer Science and related topics. You can read more about the Department here: http://www.ifi.uio.no. The Department has near 800 students on bachelor level, 300 master students, and over 200 PhD students. The totall staff of the Department is close to 250 employees, about 150 of these are full time scientific positions: about 60 Professors and Associate Professors.

A position as Postdoctor Research Fellow (named postdoc below) is open in the Robotics and Intelligent Systems (ROBIN) group (http://www.ifi.uio.no/robin), as part of the EU integrating project (IP) Engineering Proprioception in Computing Systems (EPiCS) where Department of Informatics, University of Oslo, Norway is one of eight partners.

The post-doctoral fellowship is for a duration of two years.

Job Description

The EPiCS project aims at laying the foundation for engineering the novel class of proprioceptive computing systems. Proprioceptive computing systems collect and maintain information about their state and progress, which enables self-awareness by reasoning about their behaviour, and self-expression by effectively and autonomously adapt their behaviour to changing conditions.

The postdoc, or research scientist, will work in the area of foundations for self-awareness and self-expression. That is, conduct foundational research into novel approaches towards a new generation of autonomous proprioceptive systems that possess self-awareness and exhibit self-expression. Such systems will be characterised by decentralisation, heterogeneity, dynamism and self-organisation.

The work will to some extent be based on nature-inspired computing and be targeted at online learning in self-organising environments, mechanisms and algorithms for desirable global behaviour and exploiting self-awareness to anticipate changes in the environment. The work will be focused on developing systems supporting the requirements of the different application domains in the project. The developed architectures would we applicable to be a part of both software as well as hardware target platforms.

The research will be undertaken in collaboration with other partners in the project including a close collaboration with Cercia (The Centre of Excellence for Research in Computational Intelligence and Applications) at University of Birmingham.

The postdoc position is meant to prepare the candidate for excellence in research. The candidate is expected to establish him/herself in the relevant research communities through high-quality research and the communication of research results in terms of scientific papers. Further, the candidate should contribute to toolkit development to be used by other partners in the project. Finally, there are opportunities (no requirements) to give lectures and supervise master and PhD students.

The application should describe the candidate's motivation for exploring the described area and goals that the candidate would like to achieve in the project.

Requirements:

The candidate must have a strong PhD or other corresponding education equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree in computer science and proven and well-documented knowledge in the relevant areas of computer science including programming and nature-inspired computing.

This includes methods for optimisation, learning and design like evolutionary computation and neural networks. Knowledge in distributed computing, computer architecture and digital hardware design is also beneficial. Further, additional specific knowledge related to the job description above will be emphasized when selecting the candidate for the position.

UiO (and Norway more generally) is a multi-lingual environment, where knowledge of Norwegian is not a necessity in everyday life. However, a good command of English is required. http://www.matnat.uio.no/english/research/education/proficiency_in_English.html

In summary, the selection of the candidate for the position would be based on relevant knowledge and experience in the areas described above, education results and scientific publications.

The main purpose of post-doctoral research fellowships is to qualify researchers for work in top academic positions within their disciplines. As part of the appointment, a limited amount of teaching, supervision, or other non-research duties may be assigned (10%). No one can be appointed for more than one period at the same institution.

Please also refer to the regulations pertaining to the conditions of employment for post-doctoral fellowship positions:

Salary:

Postdoctoral Research Fellow (SKO, 1352), pay grade: 57 – 64 (NOK 448 200– 510 000 depending on qualifications and seniority)

The application must include:

•Application letter
•Statement of reserach interest
•CV (summarizing education, positions, pedagogical experience, administrative experience and other qualifying activity)
•Copies of educational certificates, transcript of records, letters of recommendation
•A complete list of publications and up to five academic works that the applicant wished to be considered by the evaluation committee (preferably in PDF format)
•Names and contact details of 2-3 references (name, relation to candidate, e-mail and telephone number)
Foreign applicants are strongly advised to attach an institutionally issued explanation of their University's grading system. Please remember that all documents should be in English or a Scandinavian language.

Closing date for applications: 23 November, 2010.

The University of Oslo has an agreement for all employees, aiming to secure rights to research results a.o.

The University of Oslo has a goal of recruiting more women in academic positions.
Women are encouraged to apply.

In accordance with the University of Oslo’s equal opportunities policy, we invite applications from all interested individuals regardless of gender or ethnicity.
